Your Mac can use your CFARS email in Apple Mail, the email app that comes with every Mac. As on the iPhone, you can use the file from your settings email or set it up by hand.
Using a different device? See Email Setup (Start Here) to find the right guide. If you use Outlook on your Mac, see Email Setup in Outlook for Mac instead.
Quick way: use your settings email
- Open the email titled “[cfars.net] Client configuration settings for ciw###@cfars.net” on your Mac. If CFARS email isn’t on your Mac yet, open it from the email account where you received it.
- Save the attachment whose name starts with email- and double-click it.
- Open System Settings > General > Device Management (on some versions it’s under Privacy & Security > Profiles). Double-click the new profile and click Install.
- When asked, enter your Mac’s own password to allow it, then your CFARS email password.
The same email has attachments starting with caldav and carddav. Those add your CFARS calendar and contacts. They’re optional; see Calendar and Contacts on Mac.
Manual way
- Open Mail. From the menu bar, choose Mail > Add Account…
- Choose Other Mail Account… and click Continue.
- Fill in:
- Name: your name, as you want it to appear on emails you send
- Email Address: ciw###@cfars.net
- Password: your CFARS email password
- Click Sign In. Mail may say it’s unable to verify the account and show more fields. If it does, fill them in:
- User Name: ciw###@cfars.net
- Account Type: IMAP
- Incoming Mail Server: mail.cfars.net
- Outgoing Mail Server: mail.cfars.net
Then click Sign In again.
- Make sure Mail is ticked and click Done.
Make sure sending will work
Apple Mail sometimes treats the outgoing username and password as optional. They are required, so check them once.
- In Mail, choose Mail > Settings from the menu bar, then click Accounts.
- Select your CFARS account and click Server Settings.
- Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), make sure User Name is ciw###@cfars.net and Password is filled in.
- Click Save if you changed anything.
Check it works
Send a short email from your CFARS address to another address of yours, then reply to it. If both arrive, sending and receiving are working.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to try |
|---|---|
| The password is rejected | Use your full address, ciw###@cfars.net, as the user name. Try the same password in webmail at https://webmail.cfars.net to confirm it’s right. |
| You can receive but not send | Check the outgoing user name and password as described above. If it still fails, untick Automatically manage connection settings under the outgoing server and set Port to 465, tick Use TLS/SSL, and set Authentication to Password. |
| Nothing connects | Under the incoming server, untick Automatically manage connection settings and set Port to 993 with Use TLS/SSL ticked. |
| It stopped working after you changed your password | In Mail > Settings > Accounts > Server Settings, type the new password for both the incoming and outgoing servers, then click Save. |
